A Warm Welcome and Cultural Discovery in Osaka

Invited to Osaka City Hall

Upon arriving in Osaka, the team immersed themselves in a series of profound cultural exchanges. One of our first stops was Osaka City Hall, where we were deeply honored to be welcomed by the extremely warm people of the Economic Strategy Bureau.

It was a truly special opportunity for our middle and high school students to be invited into such a professional setting and to talk about our core project, the Tsunagu Japan Camp. As a token of the bond between our sister cities, we received a special pin featuring both city flags - a beautiful reminder of our friendship. We are incredibly grateful for this rare and wonderful experience!

From the halls of government to the beauty of nature, our next stop was Osaka Castle. We arrived to find the sakura in full bloom! Surrounded by a breathtaking landscape of spring pink, the girls enjoyed a delicious lunch from local food stalls, savoring the flavors of Osaka’s famous street food culture

Tea Ceremonies, Yukata, and the Way of the Sword

The "Omotenashi" hospitality continued at Osaka Kunei High School, where the Japanese students helped our girls dress in beautiful Yukata. After carefully tying the intricate obi bows, they invited them to a traditional tea ceremony. While they struggled a bit with the unfamiliar "seiza" (kneeling) position, the graceful movements of their peers and their warm hospitality brought bright smiles to everyone's faces.

The cultural journey didn't stop there. The girls also took on the challenge of "Kendo" for the first time. The gym was filled with their powerful kiai (shouts) as they learned to strike. Gripping the bamboo shinai firmly, they felt a direct connection to Japanese history and the martial spirit of the samurai.

A Special Reunion on the Court

Of course, volleyball remained at the heart of our mission! We were thrilled to hold a joint practice with the U15 of Victorina Himeji, a top-tier professional team in the SV.LEAGUE.

To our absolute delight, a familiar face was waiting for us: Arisa Inoue, the Japanese national team star who had coached at our K2 Offense Skill Clinic last year!

We were also deeply honored by the presence of Victorina Himeji’s head coach, Avital Selinger, who took the time to observe the girls and share his high-level insights.

The practice session was intense and inspiring. Our girls had the chance to exchange gifts with the Himeji players, sparking friendships that transcended language barriers. On the court, the level of play was exceptional, with every drill serving as a lesson in Japanese precision and teamwork.

Crossing oceans and reuniting over time, we are deeply grateful for these unbreakable bonds formed through the Power of Sports. This experience wasn't just about volleyball; it was about the lifelong connections that stay with you long after the final whistle.

Inspirational Exchange: Visiting Queenseis Kariya

Before wrapping up this leg of the journey and heading back to Tokyo, we had one more incredible opportunity: a joint practice with another SV. League team, Queenseis Kariya.

The energy on the court was electric! Our girls had a blast rising to the challenge of every high-speed drill, and it was truly inspiring to see them hold their own against such elite competition. With every touch of the ball, you could see them channeling their focus and the skills they’ve gained throughout this journey.

After working up an appetite, everyone gathered in a big circle with their delicious “bento” boxes, and the court was quickly filled with radiant smiles and laughter. Connecting over food was a fantastic way to bond and create unforgettable memories.

It was a truly heartwarming experience of camaraderie, and they left the training ground with newfound skills and full hearts.

The journey is reaching its climax, and we are on the edge of our seats to see what these amazing young athletes will achieve once they are back on the courts of Tokyo.

Keep your eyes on them - the best is yet to come!
